Adaptive and wheelchair pickleball: court specs and programs from USA Pickleball

Short answer: USA Pickleball's adaptive page says a wheelchair is considered part of the player's body, that wheelchair players may let the ball bounce twice, that the rear wheels must stay behind the baseline when serving, and that the recommended playing surface for wheelchair play is 44 by 74 feet.

Wheelchair rules and courts

  • Two-bounce: the ball may bounce twice before it is returned; a third bounce is a fault.
  • Serving: the rear wheels must stay behind the baseline and within the imaginary extensions of the sideline and centreline.
  • Kitchen: front wheels may touch the non-volley zone during a volley, but the rear wheels must be completely clear to return a volley.
  • Court size: 44 by 74 feet recommended; 50 by 80 for larger stadium-style matches.

Programs

USA Pickleball says it is building a national network of adaptive programs for people with physical or intellectual disabilities and asks organisers to submit programs. Its directory includes programs in California, Florida, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, for example BORP in Berkeley, T3 Adaptive Racquet Sports in Costa Mesa and 3rd Shot Pickleball in Reno. Check the directory for current details; listings change.

The 2026 rulebook added adaptive sections; see our wheelchair rules explainer and 2026 changes.
