India's franchise pickleball boom added another league this month. The Karnataka Pickleball Premier League made its debut October 9-11 at GKVK in Bengaluru, with seven franchise teams and 56 players selected through a nine-round draft from a pool of 89, a proper league structure rather than an open-bracket tournament.

The franchise model reaches Karnataka

The KPPL's shape will be familiar to anyone following Indian pickleball's commercial build-out: district-backed franchises, a player draft, a compact three-day season event. Teams represent different districts of Karnataka with players drawn from across India, the same regional-pride formula that turned the state's cricket league into a juggernaut and that pickleball organizers across the country are now adapting to their sport.

The draft mechanics deserve a note: 89 players in, 56 rostered, nine rounds. That is a real selection funnel, and it produces the scarcity that makes franchise leagues compelling. Players who missed the cut have a reason to improve; fans have named teams to follow rather than a bracket to scan.

Coorg Originals and the corporate newcomers

The most telling franchise in the launch field is Coorg Originals, owned by JoshuaTree.PLAY, the newly launched sports vertical of Joshua Tree, a creative company working across AI, VFX, content creation and storytelling. It is the company's first sporting property, built around the identity of the Coorg region and its MADE OF COORG philosophy. Founder and director Joshua Upputuru framed the entry as the beginning of a larger journey in sport: discovering talent, building teams, creating sporting properties.

That profile, a content and creative business buying into a pickleball league as its first sports venture, says something important about where Indian pickleball sits in the market. Franchise fees at this level are accessible enough for companies outside traditional sports ownership, and the product, short matches, visible personalities, district loyalty, is tailor-made for a content company to package. Expect more owners from media, tech and consumer brands as the state leagues multiply.

Why state leagues are the missing rung

India's pickleball pyramid has had a gap: plenty of open tournaments at the base, glamour franchise leagues at the top, and little organized team competition in between. State premier leagues fill that gap. They give district-level players a team structure to grow into, give sponsors a regional product priced below the national properties, and give the sport's administrators a talent funnel with actual match data. Karnataka entering that tier, with a draft and district franchises from day one, is doing it properly.

The venue and the calendar

GKVK, the University of Agricultural Sciences campus in Bengaluru, gave the league a large, known venue in the city that has become Indian pickleball's commercial center. A three-day October window keeps costs down and attention concentrated, the standard launch format for new leagues testing whether their model draws before committing to a longer season.

The September 20 draft in Bengaluru also quietly established a new labor market. When 89 players enter a pool for 56 spots, pickleball in India has crossed the line where team selection is genuinely competitive, and players can treat league contracts as a realistic ambition. That pipeline effect, more than any single match result, is what the KPPL's organizers will point to when they pitch season two.

India's league landscape keeps thickening

The KPPL joins a national picture that has filled in remarkably fast: the national tour, established city leagues, and now state-level franchise competitions arriving one after another through 2026. The pattern mirrors every successful racket-sport market build-out: participation first, then clubs, then organized competition, then commercial league structures. Indian pickleball has run that sequence in about four years, and the state-league phase it has now entered is where durable fan bases, and durable sponsor money, are actually built. Karnataka's debut, with a draft, district franchises and a content-company owner, is a competent first entry into that phase.

The content-company edge

If Coorg Originals becomes the league's most visible franchise, it will be because its owner treats the team as media property first: player stories, district identity, packaged highlights. That is not a criticism. New leagues die from invisibility more often than from bad economics, and an owner whose core business is storytelling attacking the visibility problem benefits all seven franchises. Other state leagues recruiting owners should note the profile.

The league's district-franchise identity will be tested immediately: whether Coorg, Bengaluru and the other represented districts produce visible fan followings in year one, or whether the league leans on the city's general pickleball crowd. Either path can work, but the franchise valuations in year two depend on the former.

What to watch

The success metrics for year one are attendance across the three days, the quality of the streamed product, and whether all seven franchises return for season two. The deeper signal is the 89-player draft pool: if that number grows in year two, the league is feeding the state's competitive pipeline, which is the whole point of the exercise.
